TACTICAL GEAR: Tactical Ball Caps Look Stupid

Tactical Ball Cap Math

Over the past few years I have been seeing people wearing these so-called “Tactical Ball Caps” or “Operator Ball Caps” with Velcro patches all over them – news flash folks, you look Silly.

Look, I am hardly Louis Vuitton or some sort of fashion guru but even I know that a Coyote Brown Ball cap with a big ass Velcro patch on the front and rear along with another Velcro patch on the top screams “Look at ME!!!! I am Sooooooooooo Tactical”.

The Velcro patches on the front and back are for flag or moral patches (I guess just one “Major League Ninja” patch is not enough) and the Velcro on the top is for an IR patch to identify you as a Friendly to Allied Gunships circling above your “AO” or something ridiculous like that.

Anyway like I said, Tactical Ball Caps look Stupid – and if you get one in multicam and I see you wearing I will kick you in the balls 1248 times.

James you have struck a blow to my ‘tactic-cool’ outlook on life.

I am a tactical ballcap owner and have been wearing a velcro-swatched cap for years now. I even have the one inch IR patches, American flag.

I guess you’re right about my hat because what you’ve outlined in this article is exactly what my wife has thought all along.

Let’s face it, no girl thinks you,re cool with a hat like that.

I just bought 2 multi cam tactical hats and a pirate patch, ill wear them when i see you in BKK.

I might even get a ID wallet and wear it strapped to my upper arm. Maybe ill just do the neck lanyard with a thumb drive, pen and ID on it. hmmmm, so many decisions.

I guess it’s cool for the gun range (a lot of ranges, especially indoor ones, require you to wear a cap for saftey. Extra line of defense against hot brass in your face.)

But other than that it’s dumb.

I’ll admit I am a reformed tactical ball cap wearer. I even used to own the Crye one in Multicam, horror of horrors. After the 1,001th person asked me why there was velcro on my hat I finally had enough.

The most tacti-cool thing about them is the names: The Crye “Shooter’s Cap,” the Tactical Tailor “Operator’s Cap,” and the Blackhawk “Contractor Cap.”

I was wearing this one, because I couldn’t find it without the Velcro

I am severely guilty of being a 5.11 freak though, I was turned on to them by a buddy at the FBI academy years ago when they were Royal Robbins.

I wear them because they are comfortable and the elastic waist is good for travel ( I eat to much on the road) My “she who will be obeyed” calls them “Goober” pants.

Underarmour makes some decent “tactical” stretchfit caps in subdued colours (OD, tan, etc) and with NO velcro anywhere. They are made of moisture wicking technical fabric and do an awesome job of keeping you cool and dry in desert heat. Only hats I’ve had that doesn’t eventually dump sweat onto my face.

One thing I like about a plain cap with no signage (or very subdued signage like the UA caps) is that it is totally greyman. Ball team caps can get a lot of attention, and you already described how tactical branded caps (Noveske, Magpul, what have you) are a part of the 5.11 tux and are a red flag — if not as bad as the velcro’d ones.

Point is … wear too much tactical and likely u ain’t the real deal!

Long before the “contracter’ look was in vouge or even heard of (outside of home building), it was mainly the law enforcement instructors that wore 5.11. FBI started it, then it trickled down to the local level.

Go to a NTOA or ILETA show or training and that’s all you see.

Like everything else, it’s cool when only the few have it, but it turns lame soon.
Wish I owned stock in 5.11 though, 55,000 people at SHOT show and half had on something of theirs!

I hear you that a lot of people wear them regardless of profession, but the point remains that they are used for friend or foe identification in the field, among other things. Cool or not cool. If it is an excuse to wear an American Flag on my head then what does it hurt? How about you not worrying about what other people are wearing, move on to something else. No ball kicking!

They are required to comply with the U.S. Dept. of State’s requirement that all private security contractors must now wear baseball hats with hook and loop tape to affix name, country flag, and/or contracting company.

Pretty much whenever we disagree on anything I just say “At least I don’t wear a Tactical Ball Cap – fag!” and I instantly win the argument

I saw a guy, unfortunately he works for the same company as me, thank God on a different project who had one with 5 pieces of velcro on it. The one in the front had the New Zealand Fag (yes, intentional typo), the back had his name (so his boyfriend could read it while he was……, an ir patch on the top, company logo on the right side, and GS-13 on the other side. This was at a PRT meeting that he took the client to in a 1 vehicle move. This vehicle had already been brassed up in a contact a couple of days before this (he had other vehicles to take, he just wanted to show off his punched up wagon. His contact report followed a WEEK later, lacking all grids and timings, simply stating how his weapons wouldn’t fire (if you can drive through why are you firing anyway). The contact report was less than a page long and seemed as if it had been written by an angry 8th grader. I could go on and on about this, but I think everyone knows the type.

so it’s just camo ones you don’t like? :) I have a multicam cap but it’s used mostly for the shooting range. I originally got it to display my brother-in-law’s pseudo flight patch from his first tour because of the cool story behind the patch (go to http://www.willynillyoif3.com, then scroll down to the Willy Nilly Story). I still where it from time to time, people always ask who Sgt Willy Nilly is.

Have you noticed how much camo clothing is now in public? I think camo is the new black when it comes to fashion.

I am now a DOD weapons instructor on an Army post. I wear the hat every day, and I even wear it as a skull cap under my skid lid when riding one of my Harleys. I say wear whats comfortable and works for you, I don’t give a sh_t what anyone else thinks of my hat, and no one else should worry what others think anyway. This whole chain of postings is a little over the top on subject matter.

I show up in jeans, a polo and a light jacket to cover up the 1911 (old school man here) on my hip. the clients always comment, “you dont look like a security guy, usually all you guys look the same”.

I stopped the 511 tux after reading an decent article in a gun magazine about “shoot me first” clothes. Basically the article warns that bad guys know the brands of clothes that good guys wear and can pick you out because of them. The other reason was when I was at an outdoor range and I happened to catch sight of myself while dry firing:
- 511 gloves
- 511 watch that I got for free when I bought the
- 511 Khaki pants
- black Danner boots

I felt like I was in a catalog picture.

Just took a turn onto this site and conversation about hats. I’ve got some history on the ground and seen the elephant and yes, I do at times wear my “tan cap” with sewn in flag as opposed to my red or blue U of A cap. I can at least lay claim to having NO velcro on any caps.

That said, I wear my “tan cap” with great pride. First, it turns the screws on all the lib’s out there, second its a way for me to display my affection and ongoing pride for the hard work our boys are doing over in the sand box. At the end of the day, Team USA is my favorite! That and to most folks it’s just tan hat with a “weird color flag” sewn on it. Most of the folks think an operator is the person at the end of 411.

For me, it’s a great rugged hat. The tan color works in the desert southwest and Tactical Tailor’s XL size fits great so it doesn’t look like my 24 oz. head is squeezed into a 14 oz. bucket. In most all situations it just blends in like a pair of jeans. I lay no claim to being an operator but if pushed past the limit my 411 comes from a 1911.

In the end who the hell cares? Wear whatever floats your boat! I say stick to your guns and wear the hat to sleep if you want! Use your own brain and dont let anyone influence your decision!

What the fuck is wrong with you? Fuck getting that bitch’s initials monogrammed on your hat….you need a sweet tattoo on your wrist of her initials right below that faggoty butterfly on your forearm.

Careful though. Inevitably, some of the guys wearing tacti-cool hats are actual operators. Kicking them in the balls can end badly for you, especially if their buddies are around at the time. ;)

So I guess since I have been wearing my hat before they were cool, to now, to where they are not cool anymore, while still deploying and flying Combat Missions out of Afghanistan makes me a tool. Oh well bro. Guess someone else needs to be a trendsetter.

Ya know, I’m just gettin back in country and reading this entire “hat crap” debate. I’m in awe! Seriously, you guys are this bored? I am, I kept reading!!! WTF is wrong with me!?!?! An actual Hat forum!!!! Three weeks ago, I had a 70 yr old Afgan man wearing a (velcro cover) sew up a pair of tan’s I tore while running for my life. A “GoatFukr” doesn’t give a rats ass about velcro, NY, Boston… I am a Ortiz fan (btw). Maybe I’m just tired and I will be digging sand out of my arse for months. But still, give it a fecking rest already! If a douchebag want to look and feel more like a “bigman” or more “Tactical than thou” then FUKM! When the SHTF, nobody gives a FECK and long as you can lay down some hate and get some!

So how bout for us folks that have the hardest damned time finding a cap that actually fits? Most of the other normal ones I have sit too short on my head which makes it a real PITA when the wind starts to kick up.

Picked up one of those caps from tactical tailor which actually fits on this melon of mine.

No wonder why my folks called me “bowlingball head” when I was growing up…

On a serious note hows about dropping some info on other good cap makers? Most things these days are one size “doesnt” fit all which is a damned shame considering some of the nice normal designs they got out there.

Let me be the first to call BULLSHIT. The closest thing to owning a company you’ve ever been is blended stocks within the company you WORK FOR. What’s your address? I would LOVE to repeatedly clobber your cockandballs with my steel toed ICB’s. Douche fag

If you feel that strongly about the multi-velcro cap (and believe me, I understand) under NO circumstances should you do a search for the version with three (3) velcro patches AND attached ear plugs. There’s a pocket on each side of the cap you can tuck the plugs into when not use, and don’t worry about losing them!! Each plug is permanently tethered to the cap with a short length of cord. Seeing such an item would surely spin you in to a ball kicking FRENZY.

I second Sean Sully’s posting! Get over the hats…. At my place they worn and used to our tactical advantage. Like being able to place the IR tag up front or on the rear so that ID of personnel can be obtained from a distance.

Hey james, your tactical hat logic is a solid as that of an anti-gun advocate. “I don’t like them so they’re stupid and no one should have them.” My unit custom made morale patches, which is not uncommon, and generally we wear them on our kits or on hats. I guess I don’t see the problem with wearing an American flag in public because I’m not ashamed to be American. I don’t see a problem with wearing my unit morale patch because i’m proud of my unit. And until a damn good reason comes up not to be American or to disregard my brothers whom I’ve fought with in Afghanistan and Iraq, then you can take your liberalistic ideals and go someplace else.

Sorry James but you WON’T be kicking me in the balls – besides, you and the few people who dont like these “tactical” hats/caps/chrome dome hider are WAY out numbered.. but for real life “applications” I guess it does boil down to a personal preference – but still I see A LOT more so called “tactical” hats/ball caps with velcro patches than not.. I used the HELL out of the 3 I have in some so called “real world” applications and think they worked great – btw my buddie who owns a large firearm store/range sells the shit out of them.. and a LOT to Military/Operators/Contractors…

I realize this was started almost two years ago, but if I go ahead and get that multicam tac hat I’ve been wanting (with the mesh back) to go along with my tan one, my acu one, and my black one, can I still get kicked in the balls?!? And am I supposed to count to 1248 or do you do that for the ball kickee? And if you lose count do we start over? Either way, it’d be the most fun my old nuts have had in years……. :(
