The DVR Spy Pen (my Rocket Firing one is in the shop)
I have always been fascinated with cool spy gadgets from the first time I saw Q equip James Bond with a Garrote watch and a pack of Mini-rocket Cigarettes. I am still waiting for the laser watch that can cut through steel and helicopter in a briefcase. But in the mean time I will have to make due with the covert tradecraft tools currently on the market.
One of the most common tradecraft activities is collecting visual or audio intelligence covertly. As recently as 5 years ago covert color AV (Audio & Video) recorders that were smaller than a pack of smokes were outrageously expensive. But over the past couple of years the technology to shrink AV components has progressed so far that anyone can now buy one for less than filling up a tank of gas.
That brings us to the Color Video and Audio Pen, this is a rocking tradecraft tool for the anyspy budget. I picked up one of these a year ago intending to use it for a gig I was supposed to work on that ended up not happening. So I tossed it in my tradecraft box for a rainy day (I did consider making my own covert Paris Hilton type videos but later decided that was even too sleazy for me).
The Color Pen AV Recorder records audio and video in AVI format, the one pictured is a 4 Gig model that will record about 4 ½ hours of video. All you do to record is press the power button on the top (it looks like part of the pen), to stop recording just press it again.
To watch the video just unscrew the pin to expose the USB and plug it into your computer, from there it functions like any USB drive – just select the video you want to watch. To charge it, just leave it plugged in until the LED turns green. The video is recorded through a color pinhole lens on the front of the pen that is small enough that no one will spot it.
The AV quality is more than sufficient for most covert surveillance jobs anywhere a light is on (this is not a low-light camera). You can also use this like a regular USB thumb drive for covertly storing files or programs like Data Shredders.
The pen is fully functional and writes in black ink from a replaceable cartridge. This is a low priced covert tradecraft tool that would have cost you thousands of dollars 5 years ago that you can now buy for a song.

I recently took a surveillance class and one of the instructors had this pen for us to play with. I was amazed at the quality of the video. Very nice product.

I bought a “shuffle” sized MP3 player at the SHOT show that shoots 640X480 Color vid to a micro sd 8 gig card for 40.00
Great video for the fact the thing can be clipped to your pocket, it even has a head phone jack and can be used as a MP3 player!

China-vision, Of course it’s all made there.
I just ordered 4 more to teardown and put in other thing, they are so small it’s amazing. I developed a gun mounted camera system 4 years or so ago along with OS, I called it the ATC, but it is huge compared with the newest offerings. Your time-lines for sales in electronics is very short these days.
